My first cookbook was a Betty Crocker. I was SO excited when it finally came. At just 15, I cherished each page. I used it for everything. From bake sales to parties, it was like a friend who always had the answers. Now 27 years later, it’s still one of my favorite cookbooks. I mean when I think about it, it’s been with me through a little bit of everything. Somehow it made it through my teenage years, college dorm living, young love & marriage, and the birth of my children. I guess I’ve really put some miles on this baby!
My Betty Crocker is what began my love of cookbooks
I think my Betty Crocker is what began my love of cookbooks. Though it was new at the time, now I really enjoy old, vintage classics. I mean classics can withstand time. But don’t get me wrong I love a cronut or cakepop just like the next person, but there’s just something about how things were originally done that can withstand the test of time.
I guess that’s why this one is still my favorite. I kind of feel like a sense of pride as I look at the battle scars, splotches and splatters on these pages. It’s tried and true. One thing I’ve learned throughout the years, is that you really can’t be afraid to fail. I guess that applies to life, and cooking. You’ve got to be bold, and just go for it. I think that mindset separates great cooking from just preparing meals. The kind of dishes you remember years and years later.
So while browsing items at a garage sale (one of my other fav things to do), I was so thrilled to stumble upon my a Better Homes & Gardens 1968. I couldn’t believe it! Thinking about the movie “Julia & Julia” I decided to embark on my own cooking journey. It feels kind of scary, and exciting, but why not? And there you have it, the birth of the Better Homes & Betty Crocker Vintage Cookbook Challenge.
I think it will be fun, and a challenge. Plus, it’ll give me a chance to try some recipes I probably wouldn’t ever give a second look. I love the nostalgia of these vintage cookbooks, but sometimes the recipes are well BLECH!!! LOL! One must truly choose wisely, if at the end of your toils one wants ANYONE to try it! LOL!
LOL, guys check out the kitchen. This was state of the art back then. I can just see the Property Brothers doing their big reveal on this one! Hahaha! But that’s part of the fun, the classics becoming new again.
Better Homes & Betty Crocker Challenge
Each week I’ll randomly select & post a recipe from either of the two cookbooks. I’ll chronicle my cooking experiences through step by step pictures, and sometimes videos. Now, I’ll just tell you straight out, it might get ugly. These meals could possibly fail, turn out disgusting, or be so riddled with disaster that it might even get rejected by the recycle bin. BUT, and that’s a big BUT, hopefully the successes will FAR outweigh the mishaps. I’ll post the randomely selected recipe on Monday, and post my results on Friday. That way if you want to join me in this challenge you can (which would be awesome). You can get the cookbook here. I’m excited, and really looking forward to this journey! Check back often.
